How can we help you today?

The ALS Association Bay Area Chapter can help you and your family cope with the day-to-day challenges of living with ALS.  We provide information, resources and referrals to a wide variety of community services.  Our programs include:

Support Groups

Support Groups

Click here to see a current list of support group meetings.

Our Chapter offers support groups that meet every month at locations across Central and Northern California.  People with ALS, caregivers, family members and friends are encouraged to join at any time.  Each meeting has time to share stories, hear about other people's experiences and ask questions about living with ALS.

The support groups are always free.  Please call us, email us or check our website for a list of times and locations of the support group meetings.

Resources for Living with ALS

Our Chapter can provide you with information and referrals as you learn about the disease or encounter new challenges.  We offer a Resource Directory that can help you find local resources, as well as books, articles and videotapes.  In addition, we can link you to equipment loans ranging from wheelchairs to lifting devices.  Our Chapter also offers educational programs to help people with ALS, caregivers and family members.

People with ALS, caregivers and health care providers can call or email us anytime for resource referrals.

Respite Care

Our Respite Care Assistance Program helps caregivers relieve stress and prevent burnout.  For families who qualify, we provide limited financial aid to pay for temporary, substitute help.  This allows the caregiver time off for rest, relaxation and errands.  Respite care can keep caregivers from becoming overwhelmed by their day-to-day responsibilities.

Families can call or email us to learn more about the program and how to apply.  Click here for detailed information on respite care in our resource directory.

Share the Care Program

A special part of our respite program, "Share the Care" helps families build a longer-term support system.  We work with you to develop a caregiver support structure - a circle of family, friends and community members who "lighten the load" by taking on speciric, manageable, helpful tasks.  Every participant feels richer for the experience, and people with ALS and their families can maintain their dignity.

Please call or email us for more information on how to set up a "Share the Care" group.

Augmentative Alternative Communication

Our Chapter offers special equipment loans and in-home technical support for patients with communication needs who do not have the financial resources or insurance to cover the costs.

People with ALS and caregivers can contact us to learn more.  We work closely with professionals at the Forbes Norris ALS Research Center and the ALS Center at UCSF to provide these services.

Forbes Norris ALS Research Center

Our Chapter works closely with two Bay Area centers that are ALSA-certified for high-quality medical care.  Both centers take a multidisciplinary approach to provide a diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

The centers' staff include a neurologist, nurse, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, dietitian and respiratory therapist.  You can also meet a Chapter staff member at either center once a week.
